The Long Goodbye

This may come as a shock to some but it has been decided (a little while ago, actually): we will be leaving the Falkland Islands in June and won’t be returning. I won’t go into the details publicly, for personal and professional reasons, but it’s nothing untoward. Our time here has simply come to an end (as it was originally meant to three years ago).

Obviously the timing isn’t ideal; there’s this global pandemic on, you see. Our destination is currently unknown, but if this move has taught us anything it’s that you never know what’s waiting around the corner.

Those who have followed the blog over the past five years will know that these islands do (and will always) hold a very special place in our hearts. Our lives have changed in no small number of ways since we arrived here and so it will be incredibly difficult for us to say goodbye. It was always going to be.

Signing off the blog is not going to be easy either and we have a lot to organise before our departure so, for now, I leave you with the most appropriate photo that I have taken this week: the sun sets on Stanley silhouetting what remains of HMS Afterglow. Even her name seems appropriate now.DSC_0453

Stay safe and see you on the other side.

  1. I love this blog! Very sad to think you won’t be there anymore. Always enjoyed your writing H & B and I for one have a far greater appreciation of the FI history and wildlife because of you!
Obviously it will be nice to see you when we are all allowed, but my gosh my what a time to leave. Atleast you get to come back for summer 🙂
Got a spare room in Aber if you would like a trip down memory lane and show the wee man the sights!
Safe trip back and very best of wishes to all 3 of you!

    • Thanks Cat! I am definitely going to miss having the outlet for my writing and now-useless facts. We are looking forward to a summer, it has been some time! We did migration wrong last year so we haven’t seen a Summer in a while now.
Amber beckons one day, the wee one has to see the sights. Hope the course is going well and hope we get to see you sometime soonish!

  2. Hi Bailey, Hilary and I ( Simon’s parents ) have enjoyed your blog immensely and hopefully you will find another vehicle for your writing talents. In my experience, life is seldom a straight line of predicted activities. When one door closes there is always another waiting to open to new horizons and I’m sure this will be so for you and Hann. The other side can be very exciting and full of new experiences. We wish you both the very best, stay safe and well. Geoff and Hilary Page

    • Thanks Geoff and Hilary! Yes, it’s all a bit of a logistical quagmire right now, but one way or another we’ll wade through and end up somewhere on the other side. Ultimately, things have changed a great deal for us and our whim is no longer the driving factor behind our decisions. Instead, a small, loud bundle in a jumpsuit seems to have taken over our decision making. By that, of course, I mean the baby, not that Han has taken to wearing jumpsuits. Stay tuned and find out what else we get up to!

  3. Noooooooo! You can’t stop now! Your fandom expects regular episodes of derring-do, sheep rustling and other interesting activities.

Good luck with packing Milo. Looking forward to reading the next chapter of the family. I know it must be a tough decision, but hope all goes well in the future. Peter

    • Thanks Peter. The time has come. We’ll tell you the whole story sometime, you won’t be surprised to hear some of the less logical aspects of it after your time here too.
It’s a strange time to be living in all round, but the world with have to look back and see that Covid19 saw the end of Pengoing South. Not the most significant consequence, I’m sure.

    • Thanks Puddy. I aim to somehow sign the whole thing off with a final round-up, if I can find the words. We just wanted to let people know the end is nigh.
We may see you soon in Ireland, if/when we’re allowed again.
